Ten o’clock news.

Good evening.

Just wanted to tell you about some exciting milestones that happened today!

I was working on pictures this morning and ended up sitting on the floor, as my albums are on the bottom of the bookshelf. If I sit on the floor, I usually place my right leg turned in and my left leg stretched out. Not today! I suddenly realized that I was sitting with both legs crossed. No funny pinching, no Charlie horse cramps in the left thigh–just me sitting with my legs crossed. 😀 I have not been able to do that in over a year! 😀 Milestone #1.

Ok, so this might not be the biggest milestone (has nothing to do with my health other than utilizing upper arm strength)…but Milestone $2: I rearranged my closet shelves!!! 😀 I just think it is great! I feel it is more organized and a better use of the limited shelving. 🙂 Just a fun check mark off my “things that don’t really need to be done, but are starting to bug me” list. Always a satisfying feeling.

And (drum roll, please)…tonight was my last Lovenox blood thinner shot!!!! 😀 Yay!!! After the blood check this morning I told my mom, “If tonight is my last one, I know exactly how to celebrate!” Any guesses?? I am going to sleep in tomorrow morning!!! Ah! Such a way to celebrate! No setting the alarm to get a morning shot. However, I have a feeling I will still be awake, because my body is now used to being up at that time–bummer, but at least I now I have the option to still stay in bed. 😉 Thus, Milestone #3: I have officially transferred from the blood thinner shots to the pills.

That, my friends, concludes a great day!

More to come…

Birds of a Feather

I read this quote in college during the semester I was on the Tarceva oral chemo pills. Amidst chemo, my strenuous 18 credit hours and volunteer time…I found the quote so amusing and fitting to myself that I adopted it for my “quote” of the semester.

Be like a duck. Calm on the surface, but always paddling like the dickens underneath. ~Michael Caine

It is nothing theological, philosophical or life changing; in spite of myself, I did not do a good job that semester of keeping calm on the surface…even though everything in me was paddling underneath.

I have not thought of that quote in quite sometime. It was only until Mom and I took a walk around the community park/pond that it resurfaced in my memory. We pull up to the park and see the paparazzi of ducks approaching our car. Mom mentioned we should have brought bread. I remembered that I had one packet of graham crackers left over from the hospital in my purse. Success:

IMG_2667 IMG_2669 IMG_2671 IMG_2672 IMG_2673 IMG_2674 IMG_2675 2 IMG_2676 IMG_2677 IMG_2678 IMG_2679 IMG_2680 2 IMG_2684

The small packet of crackers did not last long, even though I tried breaking off small pieces–so we just started to take our walk. Most followed us:

IMG_2686 IMG_2688

After realizing we had no more food, they made a rondevu at our car.

IMG_2689 IMG_2691 IMG_2692 IMG_2695

Some needed a little nudge to get out of the way… 🙂

IMG_2697

IMG_2698

This little time at the park reminded me of when Jesus fed the five thousand (Matthew 14:13-21). Jesus went to a remote spot to be by himself. The crowds (like our ducks) followed him…seeking Him to meet their physical needs. Jesus did not send them away, like my nudge to the ducks, but had compassion on them. Come dinnertime–Jesus did not have graham crackers, but the disciples had two fish and five loaves of bread. His disciples questioned as to how they could feed these people with only this small amount of food? It was a step of faith to believe that Jesus could feed all. And He did–with abundant left overs! The people did not long for more like the ducks at the park. They left satisfied.

So often I come to God like a duck. I can pretend on the outside to have everything calm and under control. But I do not. My inner being tries to control everything from having a productive schedule to keeping my medicines list straight. It starts to consume me on the inside even if I am calm on the outside. But God sees me as I am: a duck ready for graham crackers–hoping for more than just a life running off a time schedule.

I write this now, because I know it will happen. It is my transition stage–going from high activity and bustle of health related issues to entering the days of “normality.” When this happens, I see my high dependency in Christ diminish. I start taking things back in my own hands; in busyness, I forget to take time to sit and rest; and I easily question the simple tests of faith like the disciples.

It is dinnertime and I don’t want to leave the mountain yet; I still have so much yet to learn.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. ~Matthew 11:28-30

Blessings from bruises.

Because I am on blood thinners, my bruises seem to be taking their precious time in healing. Right now, I have a lot of combination of colors…most are still dark purple or blue on my stomach. When I looked in the mirror this morning after my shot, I remarked out loud to myself, “That looks like a seahorse.” Yep, a seahorse…like finding shapes in the clouds. 🙂 On the right side of my stomach, a little heart was formed when two bruises came together. It was then I started thinking of my bruises–the ones on my stomach that go unnoticed to the massive bruise on my right arm where the IV was placed on the outer part of my palm. It extends a good two inches of brownish-red to below my outer wrist. Very obvious and not very pretty, unless I am wearing a sweater or beads.

But I figure, bruises are temporal. They should (I hope) start to turn their greenish-yellow healing colors in the next few weeks before slowly fading back to my pale skin color–then just disappear altogether. I know you may think this is strange, but if anyone else is an organized, planner-ahead person…well, then I just really can’t explain why I thrive on this sort of activity–but, yes, I already have my Valentine cards/gifts set out to write and get ready to mail in the next week or so. Crazy, I know. I think it came about strong this year, due to the paintings I have been putting together for the coffee shop. Or maybe reading some verses in I John, or the sermon last week at church, or watching a few chic flicks on the recovery days. Not sure. As I was finishing up my paintings yesterday for Beans-n-Cream, I could not help but do one more 8×10 painting as thoughts of love, red, purples, bruises and blessings came to mind.

DSCN1119

Somehow all these thoughts made me stop and think of the real Love that has been shown. Mercy and grace were given by blood and bruises: Jesus, dying for the sins of the world that we might know God and know His Love.

But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.

Isaiah 53:5, NKJV

It is not even February yet, but it makes Valentine’s Day so much more anticipated…and I think that is why I anticipate it–because it is like Easter (i.e. Saying “He Lives” more than once a year!); the holiday means so much more when you think of it every day. How can I love my family, neighbors, strangers in the way that God has shown His Love to me? It has been in my thoughts and prayers as I want to show that kind of Love…and bless others who have so richly blessed me. Fail on days I will (human nature), but God’s Love remains. And that is what matters. ❤

Cd Rotations.

After talking with a friend this morning about our favorite oldies albums, I got to thinking how–as of late–there have been a few cd’s that have been rotating in and out of my cd player. I can’t really tell you why these three specific cd’s, seeing as they have nothing in common such as music style, but I have been enjoying their songs (and lyrics I know).

Music in the soul can be heard by the universe. ~Lao Tzu

Here are the cd’s:

1. Cindy Morgan, Listen. I initially got the cd out a few weeks ago to listen to a specific song titled, “The Master’s Hand.” I ended up listening to the whole cd, reading the lyrics and just taking in the message that God is love and I am in need of Him. A few other favorite songs are “Need”, “The Promise” and my favorite jazz style song, “The Say It’s Love (‘Stars’)”. If I ever still desired to create a song to sing at say a Saturday night coffee shop, it would have to be something like that one. 🙂

2. David Crowder*Band, Illuminate. In all honesty, I did not like the band when it first came out in the early 2000’s. Now that their band days are ending and they move on to different areas of ministry, I am very sad. They became one of my favorite bands. Their worship was never defined. They reminded me a lot of the UK worship band of the 1990’s called Delirious? (The question mark is part of the band name. 🙂 ) A few of my favorite songs on this cd are “No One like You”, “Only You” and “Deliver Me.” Mom also has David Crowder’s book called, Praise Habit: Finding God in Sunsets and Sushi. She just finished it, so now I want to read it. Whether it is this cd or book, or any others by David Crowder*Band, I am sure you will enjoy every minute of it!

3. My Utmost of His Highest: The Covenant. This cd is by a set of various artists who brought songs to reflect on Oswald Chamber’s book, My Utmost for His Highest. It is something I listen to when I am reflecting or just want something relaxing to fall asleep to at night. It starts off with my favorite song recorded by Be Be Winans called, “All of Me.” The songs seem to flow after that with meaningful lyrics and the cd cover gives quotes to the songs with some of Oswald Chamber’s writings. A few other favorite songs are “Psalm 121”, “Through All the Years” and one by Michael W. Smith titled, “Someday (Set the Children Free).” That song always gets tears to my eyes. It is a very encouraging cd and would be a great gift for someone you know that is in need of encouragement. Just add Oswald’s book with it and the set is complete. 🙂

Maybe you have heard these cd’s before…maybe not. Music still is such a big part of my life, even as frustrating as it is most times where I cannot pick out words or the beat. But it is music. Do you have any albums that you find yourself returning to?

Reminisce

Today, I met a wonderful lady. She and Mom know each other, but today was my first day meeting her. She was so full of life and wisdom. What was probably only meant to be a small business chat, ended up with cups of Egg Nog, my peppermint tea and hours of talking, encouraging and sharing Scripture. She showed me the fullness of God’s mercy, goodness and grace. I sat in my spot on the sofa and felt blown away, like marveled, at her testimony. I knew God sent her today. For me.

Yesterday I got in a little quarrel with my sister. She left to go back to school and I was just about to eat lunch. I was so upset at myself, I just went to my room and cried. I ended up falling asleep until the afternoon. But before I fell asleep, I told God that I can’t do this anymore. I don’t know what I am doing in life; I have no friends here my age, no job, no passion and most of all, I knew I was lacking in my walk with God. How could I face the mountains without Him? Just so much has happened over the past week or so, and I felt like I am in a flood. Just drowned in self-pity, pain and confusion.

God showed me again today…no matter how low the valley gets, there is always hope, because He is with me. He loves me and wants to teach me about His goodness, mercy and grace during my trials. I just was a loss for words today as she shared her story. Unthinkable things, circumstances and choices in her life. Yet, here she is saying, “Your will, not mine,” and truly has the God-given passion for reaching out to the hurting and the lost. God taught me so much in just a few hours, I felt like I was taking a college class. 🙂 What an amazing day!

Today was a cloudy and rainy day, but I felt rays of sunshine in my soul.

Though the fig tree should not blossom,
nor fruit be on the vines,
the produce of the olive fail
and the fields yield no food,
the flock be cut off from the fold
and there be no herd in the stalls,
yet I will rejoice in the Lord;
I will take joy in the God of my salvation.
God, the Lord, is my strength;
he makes my feet like the deer’s;
he makes me tread on my high places.

Habakkuk 3: 17-19

KY.

Hello! We just got back from a mini vacation for my sister’s Fall Break. We ventured to the land of bluegrass, horses and fall color beauty, yep…we went to Kentucky! We spent our four-day weekend in the area of Lexington, Georgetown and Frankfurt–lots of horses and history all around!!

I promise pictures and stories to come, but right now I have to head out for my MRI scheduled at 4pm today. I see doctors in Cincinnati on Thursday. So many more posts coming your way this week. 🙂

Just to ease your curiosity–my new Gravatar picture was taken by my sister at Ashland: The Henry Clay Estate. We enjoyed a tour of his home and grounds. A very fascinating and historical place if you are ever in the Lexington area.

More to come…

The Start of Something.

It is here. The start of something. I go outside and I breath in. Fresh air! Crisp! The start of Autumn has begun. The trees are feeling it too. They are beginning to change color. Although it is not immediate, it is the start of something.

So in life, I see the same with prayer. The start of something. Prayer is an immediate message to God. But His answers are not always as fast. Patience, endurance, hope. The answers come in as a start of something. A start of something greater than ever imagined.

People pray for my healing. And now I am praying for a loved one’s healing. And even though it has only been a week for her compared to my ten years, I find myself already getting frustrated. Why can’t God just hear our prayers and heal her? Then I think of all those who have prayed for me diligently for the past ten years. Some everyday. I wonder if they have ever asked the same question. But they continue to pray anyway…even when they cannot see any results of healing.

The leaves will continue to change their color until the last has fallen. How can a single leaf survive the harvest winds? Patience, God’s timing is perfect. Endurance, God will never give us more than we can bear. Hope, God holds our future. And I begin to feel it. The start of something. Peace–like fresh, crisp Autumn air to my soul. And I long for more.

A Monday in Disguise

The past few days I have been a walking contradiction. I have had P.O.D.’s song, “Alive” on my mind all weekend, but I have been anything but that. Combination of lack of enthusiasm plus lots of work hours, I spent most of my spare time taking naps or simply putting off what I need to do. At the time, I just did not want to do it..mostly writing emails and letters. I even found myself thinking yesterday, “I am tired of writing.” (GASP!) I know. But it was an honest thought. Then, I get two letters in the mail. One from a friend back home in CO and another from one of my Grandma’s. Cherished letters. Handwritten just for me. That changed everything.

So today as I hummed, “Alive,” I thought to myself: “Today has been a good day!” I had fatigue at work, but a cup of tea and relaxing for a half hour on the couch when I got home solved that problem. My back has been giving me a lot of pain, so I took breaks every hour to lay on the floor. Always worth it, especially since Terminex was here this morning…no more surprise spiders leaping out from under the couches while I try to stretch.

Today was raining, but I loved it. We need the moisture and I needed the excuse to stay inside. Plus I themed it while I worked on sorting pictures by watching Singing in the Rain. Not much beats that. I finished sorting by year all of my college pictures and uploaded ones that I need to copy off onto Shutterfly. I felt like a champion, even though the piles and piles of all my other pictures are still in unorganized heaps.

Yep, today was a Monday in disguise…no doubt about it.

How was your Monday?

Recipe: Stuffed Zucchini

My mom is an amazing cook! This summer season she has been cooking some amazing dinners whether grilled, cold pasta salads or in the oven. Tonight she used fresh picked zucchini from her garden to bake Stuffed Zucchini.

Mom uses a very practical idea for keeping her recipes easy and accessible. She uses a photo album!!

While I think recipe boxes are very cute and classic, I like the way the recipes in the photo album are easy to flip through and easy to read. To make things easier at dinner time, like my mom did for herself, you can categorize.

Recipes come from a wide variety of sources: internet, family or friends, magazines or ones you make yourself. I personally do not like to hand copy recipes. They turn out like burnt cookies. 😉 I am glad others enjoy it though. It is fun to flip through the “cookbook” and find Grandma’s handwriting on recipes. I am blessed with three Grandma’s, so there are many delicious recipes…my favorites being the different cookies and cakes. Flipping through the pages brings you an appetite and good memories! After all, isn’t that how most recipes start?

Stuffed Zucchini was a magazine clipping. I think it was probably from Taste of Home. Regardless, it was first made by a lady named Ruth. Mom used her zucchini and also used her garden herbs: dill (I think) and she added basil to the sauce.

Ingredients:

2 medium zucchini (Mom had 3 large ones)

1/2 pound ground beef or bulk Italian sausage

1/4 cup chopped onion

1 garlic clove, minced

2/3 cup seasoned bread crumbs

1/3 cup milk

1/8 teaspoon dill weed

1 cup spaghetti sauce (Mom used a whole jar)

1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (Mom used the rest of the Cajun curds from Young’s Dairy! Added some good flavor!!)

Directions:

Cut zucchini in half lengthwise. Scoop out pulp, leaving a 1/4-in shell. Chop pulp; set pulp and shells aside. [Mom is putting her pulp/seeds in her compost pile, so it tastes fine without it too!] In a skillet, brown meat, onion, and garlic; drain. Add pulp, bread crumbs, milk and dill. Spoon into zucchini shells. Place in a greased 2-qt. baking dish. Top with spaghetti sauce; sprinkle with cheese. Cover [foil] and bake at 325 degrees for 30 minutes or until zucchini is tender.

Yield: 2 servings [but it fed our family of four! 🙂 See picture below–plus add another pan! Made us two dinners this week!]

It is really a delicious recipe! I hope you enjoy it!!

Time for “Now and Then!”

Have you ever seen Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs? Your first view of the dwarfs is not at home…but at work. “We work, work, work, work, work, work, work–we work all night and day! In a mine! (echos) In a mine! (echos).” 🙂 Not surprising that their carts are full of all sorts of different gems and so easily found. Classic for sure! But with the Fourth of July right around the corner, I am remembering good days in the old mining town–Creede, Colorado.

Creede is located in the San Luis Valley…go much much farther than the city limits and you are in mining mountain territory. Growing up, the mines were not active but they had the mining museum open so you could see how the miners back in the late 1800’s mined for silver. Currently, a mine called The Last Chance Mine still operates. Back in 1889, Nicolas Creede found silver in the mountains above what is now known as Creede, CO. He yelled to his partner, “Holy Moses! I’ve found it!” and they staked their claim as the Holy Moses mine. The Last Chance was also during this era.

Then. (My sisters and I at the mining museum.)

Growing up, we went up to Creede/surrounding areas a lot during the summer months. Some of the shops close for winter, but Creede still thrived as a town during the winter months too. Thinking of the history of Creede–it is amazing that it is still alive and thriving today! The Silver Panic of 1893 left Creede in a bind. When things reopened most went to Leadville to mine for silver there. In the early 1900’s, the town went through a few fires and floods. Most of the buildings that you see today are not the originals from 1890’s but from after the fires/floods. Some, however, are still there.

Creede is best known for their Fourth of July celebrations. Big town parade, kid events digging for treasures in a saw dust pile (huge pile!!!), souvenir shops, rock-drilling contests, and of course the fireworks from the mountains above.

Creede is also famous for the Western outlaws that came for the silver rush in the 1890’s. “Soapy Smith” and his gang, Bob Ford–the man who shot Jesse James, Ed O’Keffey–the man who shot the man who killed Jesse James (lame, but that is why he shot Bob Ford), and Poker Alice. All in Creede. 🙂 Wow! All interesting characters and part of the good ol’ West!!!

Creede Theater and Hotel. The theater has amazing play productions! My favorite: Our Town. I remember my older sister saying that we should leave after the second act. Now I know why, I cried the whole third act!

This past June, during our time in CO, my mom and I got to spend a day in Creede while the others hiked (they went to The Last Chance Mine). Mom and I finally went to the Creede Museum! After all those years…so glad we did that, because there is so much history in there! Old photographs, household items, an old saloon bar counter, and also the old Creede Hotel piano. I forget his name, but some famous self-learned piano player played for the guests at the hotel. It said on the piano that he could not read music but played by ear. He “read” a catalogue…he flipped different sections for different moods. They even had the catalogue there and a picture of him at the piano (you can see the book behind him). 🙂 I thought that was great!

During our day at Creede, we also got in on the latest of the “Hollywood gossip” about Johnny Depp’s upcoming movie, The Lone Ranger, in which he plays Tonto. They are filming part of the movie behind Creede! There was all this buzz about the movie. Some of the locals (and others in the valley) are in the movie as background people in scenes. The man who took the picture of my mom and I by the fudge shop was talking about his role that started filming that night…a night shooting scene, ooohhhh! Cool! Our family does not go to the movies often–I did a lot in college, but I don’t anymore since it is a waste of money with no captions. BUT, we did all decide that May 31, 2013…we will be going to see the new film (just because we want to see the parts filmed in CO). 🙂 This is the closest I will ever get to big time Hollywood-ness:

The road to the mines is closed for filming.

If I see a windy scene…I will know what caused it. 🙂

I also think the whole Colorado history is amazing–how it all ties together. Nicolas Creede sold the mine in 1890 to David H. Moffat, who owned the Denver & Rio Grande railroad. There are stations all across the state where the railroad used to run from town to town. It was the biggest form of traveling. The museum had the prices for the trip routes. It took over a full day to get from Denver to Creede. Major stops were in Pueblo, Alamosa and Wagon Wheel Gap (in between South Fork and Creede). The last stop was in Creede.

The train station is now the Creede Museum.

Creede is quite the town. I think I like it so much because of the community. It is close-knit; it is genuine. They are proud of their history and welcome all travelers to share the experience. If you are ever in Colorado…the mining towns are a neat experience. Full of history and treasures. You just never know what you might find!!
